Chapter 14

“If you don’t die of thirst, there are blessings in the desert.”

—Anne Lamott

WITH A DEMON, A GOD, and a hellhound waiting below, I had expected someone would break my fall. I’d also mistakenly assumed the sand would soften the blow of my graceless landing. Or at least let me off without a concussion.

As I waited for the world to stop spinning, Bub and Anubis stared down at me, brows pinched with concern and mouths moving. But I couldn’t hear them over the ringing in my ears.

“Bitch,” I whispered, still struggling to find the air that had been forcefully ejected from my lungs.

Anubis frowned and stood upright. “That was uncalled for,” he said, the words sounding fuzzy and distant as my hearing returned.

“I tried to help you.” Bub squatted beside me and took the bag gripped in my hands. It hadn’t done much good on the way down, but I could at least be grateful the water bottle inside had survived.

“Sekhmet,” I rasped. “She’s here.”

“You’re certain?” Anubis’s gaze snapped up in time for him to watch the goddess soar over the wall. Her red skirt billowed around her waist as she delivered a kick to the center of his chest. He grunted in surprise but grabbed hold of her ankle before she could get away.

Sekhmet let out a squeal as he twisted sideways and slammed her into the ground next to me. She recovered quickly, rolling out of the path of Anubis’s sandaled foot before it stamped right where her head had been.

“Idiots,” she hissed, scrambling to her feet. “You should have quit when you had the chance. I’ve no qualms about killing you here.”

“Oh yeah?” I grunted and pulled myself up onto an elbow. “Well, I don’t have a problem killing you anywhere.”

My hands itched to wrap around her neck and wring it, but then I spotted the leather case strapped to her hip. Bub noticed, too. He made a grab for it, but Sekhmet was faster. Her leg whipped up sharply, and she spun a tight circle before bringing her heel down across the back of Bub’s skull.

His face smashed into the sand at my feet, and his arms flopped uselessly over my calves, pinning me to the ground. Saul let out a confused yap at the display as if he weren’t sure whether he should intervene. To be fair, he’d witnessed plenty of sparring sessions with my apprentices in the backyard, and the last time he’d seen Sekhmet, we’d all been playing nice.

“Appugno!” I shouted, pointing at the goddess. Her eyes swelled at the Latin command, and she tore off across the desert with Saul bounding after her.

Anubis looked like he might give chase as well, but then a distant yowl drew his attention back to the wall. I knew that sound.

“Are you okay?” I tugged at Bub’s arm, trying to maintain patience as my panic bloomed.

“I think so.” He touched his head and winced. I gave his other arm a yank to free my legs.

“Good, then get up,” I said, pulling him along with me as I stood.
